When can I sign up my son or daughter? | Right now! You can access our REGISTRATION FORM now to sign up online. |
What are the age limits of the club? | We are currently a K-6 club. This means that any child in Kindergarten through 6th grade is eligible for the 2024-2025 season. |
What is a singlet deposit? | We require a $75 deposit for the team singlet. Your child will be given a singlet at the beginning of the season and the singlet will be expected to be turned in as the season ends. Once the singlet is returned your $75 check will be returned to you. If the singlet is not returned, we will use the cashed check to replace the singlet. |
What is a volunteer deposit? | Similar to the singlet deposit, each family will be required to pay a $100 deposit for volunteering. An adult for each child is required to volunteer for two volunteer opportunities throughout the season. This could be working a table at a wrestling meet or tournament (No experience required!), working the concession stand, or helping run practice as a coach. If the volunteer opportunities have been met by the end of the season, the $100 volunteer deposit will be returned to you. If the volunteer opportunities have not been met, the check will be cashed and used to further the Shaler Area Wrestling Club. |
how many fundraisers are there during the season? | We will have various fundraisers over the course of the season. |
Where are the tournaments? | There are hundreds of wrestling tournaments in the state of PA every year. Here in Western PA there are multiple tournaments each weekend. |
Does my son or daughter have to go to tournaments? | Not at all! If your child is interested in just practicing and getting to know the sport of wrestling, that is completely up to you and your child. However, there are wonderful benefits to competing and we encourage everyone to give it a try when they feel ready. |
Do tournaments cost money? | Yes, most tournaments cost between $25 and $45 dollars. We will post all pertinent information for each tournament on our website to include the price. |
Where can I purchase club apparel? | We will open a Club apparel store near the beginning of the season. More information coming soon! |
Can I watch my child practice? | Unfortunately, no. We prefer all parents stay out of the room during our practice times. This eliminates distractions for our younger wrestlers and helps them focus on learning the sport. |
What skills will my child learn from wrestling? | The physical skills associated with wrestling are very apparent. Balance, strength, flexibility are all skills that kids will hone from wrestling. However, some of the most important skills learned are confidence, leadership, and pushing through adversity. One of the greatest wrestlers to ever live, Dan Gable, is quoted as saying "After you have wrestled, everything else in life is easy."Here is a great article from USA wrestling on lessons learned from wrestling: https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2019/July/18/Life-Lessons-Learned-Through-Wrestling |
What does my child need for wrestling? | Typically, the only thing needed to start wrestling are wrestling shoes and a great attitude. As you get into the season, there are some other small pieces of equipment needed to keep the kids safe. Headgear is typically required at most tournaments for youth wrestling because of the benefits if holds for the wrestlers ears. Without headgear, cauliflower ear can form and is very painful! Outside of wrestling shoes and headgear, there are a few optional items (mouth piece for tooth safety, a singlet for off season tournaments). Here are a few great resources for these items. And remember, the most expensive item is not always needed. The classic Asics Matflex or Adidas HVC for $39.99 is a great pair of wrestling shoes and will last for as long as they fit! http://www.wrestlingmart.com - Great prices, great selection http://www.bluechipwrestling.com - Another site with great prices, great selection http://www.rudis.com - High end wrestling gear, expensive, but extremely great quality |
